underground Hi-Fi

Adventures in creative collaboration between analog and digital, tube and solid-state.

Welcome to the underground. Designer Rob Monk is questing to apply the art of audio, combining the best of analog, digital, tube and transistor circuits to create beautiful looking and sounding things. Emphasis will be on unique designs for unique applications, with some current concepts including:

I am currently seeking partners to silk-screen the component enclosures with control function labeling and original artwork.

There are, no doubt, other excellent collections of resource-links on DIY and hand-craft audio production. However, everyone has their own unique eye for what's useful and good, and I've built up a pretty big bookmark list of resources that caught my eye during my research. Further suggestions are welcome -- especially suppliers of transformers, as they seem to be the main cost-factor in sourcing parts for hi-fi.

GPS & MeshNets & ThinClients

Municipal city-wide wireless digital network projects, such as the one Philadelphia is now developing, present an opportunity for a revolution in personal communications. Because the mesh networks on which such a system would rely inherently depend upon individuals' participation, this revolution in communication technology could put broadcast media in the hands of all people in a way that has been imagined, but never realized, for previous 'revolutions?' like radio and television. Included in this revolution will be the availability of high-quality streamed audio and video from anywhere to anywhere, at little or no cost beyond that of the basic system infrastructure maintenance.

But corporations have an interest in controlling media, because, by homogenizing our cultural universe, they enhance the efficiency of marketing strategies and ease the problem of assessing market demographics. An anarchic network of home-brew content demolishes this scheme and forces marketers to respond to a hodge-podge of virtual-local demographic niches that can transform themselves overnight in unpredictable ways.v

One of the things at stake in current intellectual property legal battles is the ability of corporate interests to create market instruments (legal systems for ownership) that our human intuitions tell us make no sense. Such tools aim to create a legal framework for the ownership of DNA code and, in the present discussion, the next-generation multimedia/meshnetwork/cellphone/internet/pc/ tranceivers that will serve as the controllers for individual nodes in the coming mesh networks. Mesh networking forms a powerful and manifold nexus for existing trends in technology demand -- too powerful for a mass culture to resist. Our only hope is to embrace it with technological aptitude, creating our own networks so that we can maintain an active role in our own cultural futures. No doubt, big corporations will be seeking ways to maintain ownership and market dominance over mesh technologies, in a similar way to that in which they now have us effectively renting our cellular phones (you ?''buy?'' the phone for ?''free?'' or for 1/20th its real cost, and then effectively pay rent on it in the form of your one or two-year service contract). A similar arrangement with the coming generation of Mesh-enabled media-enabled network nodes would leave us locked-out of the systems?'' real potential, subject to monopolistic pricing for a menu of pre-digested derivatives of a technology infrastructure that should be essentially free.
